AMMAN, JORDAN |A1 Qaeda plotted bomb
and poison gas attacks against the U.S.
Embassy and other targets in Jordan, two
self-proclaimed conspirators confessed in
videotape aired Monday on Jordanian state
television. A commentator said the plotters
wanted to kill 80,000 people.

The 20 -minute taped program released
by Jordan authorities contained what were
described as confessions by two detained
suspects about the foiled plot.

Azmi al- Jayousi, identified as the head
of a Jordanian terror cell, said he was acting

on the orders of Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi, a
Jordanian wanted by the United States for
allegedly organizing terrorists to fight U.S.
troops in Iraq on behalf of al Qaeda. Al-
Jayousi said he met al-Zarqawi in neighbor-
ing Iraq to plan the foiled plot.

Al-Jayousi said he received about
$170,000 from al-Zarqawi to finance the
plot and used part of it to buy 20 tons of
chemicals. He did not identify the chemi-
cals, but said they “were enough for all the
operations in the Jordanian arena.” Images of
what the commentator said were vans filled

with blue jugs of chemical explosives were
included in the broadcast.

Government officials have said the suspects
plotted to detonate a powerful bomb target-
ing Jordan’s secret service and use poison gas
against the prime minister’s office, the U.S.
Embassy and other diplomatic missions. Had
the bomb exploded, it could have killed at least
20,000 people, the officials have said.

A Web site known for publicizing messag-
es from Muslim extremists on Monday car-
ried a purported claim of responsibility from
al-Zarqawi for suicide boat attacks against
Gulf oil terminals Saturday that killed three

A Georgia man credits a highway crash
that totaled his truck with saving his
life. Eddie May Jr. began choking on a
piece of food about noon Friday as he
was driving east on Interstate 40 near
Hickory, N.C., said Highway Patrol
Trooper Robert Abernathy. May told

authorities he started getting dizzy, then
blacked out. His Ford F-350 crossed
the median and grazed a westbound
tractor-trailer, Abernathy said, and the
force of the impact dislodged thefood
from May’s throat. May suffered minor
injuries and will be charged with care-
less and reckless driving, and failure
to wear a seat belt, (ap)

took off from England on Mondayto begin thefirst leg of his24,700-

Invented in Spain in the 1920s, the autogyro never reached the com-
mercial heights of the helicopter, since it’s neither speedy nor eco-
nomical. An autogyro was James Bond’s preferred method of trans-

A42-year-old man in Japan was arrest-
ed last week for trying to walk off with
a Japanese confectioner’s smiling,
cherubic mannequin. The grinning
doll, called Peko-chan, has appar-
ently been high on crooks’ hit lists.
Company officials say more than 30
of the dolls have disappeared since
January. The man who was charged
told police he distracted the manager
with a strawberry shortcake order in
order to swipe the doll, then planned
to unload it on the Internet, where the
mannequins can fetch up to $2,000,
Reuters reported. Police are investi-

said Monday it will not consider
reinstating mealtime prayers at a
state -funded military college, turn-
ing aside an appeal from Virginia
officials who wanted to preserve
the tradition.

Justice Antonin Scalia blasted
his colleagues for refusing to hear
the case, arguing that it raised
important church- state and other
questions. Leaving those issues
unresolved is unfair to Virginia
Military Institute, Scalia wrote in a
dissent joined by fellow conservative

VMI, part of the
state university
system in Virginia, lost a previous
Supreme Court battle over its all-
male admissions policy. The high
court forced VMI to admit women
in 199b, as Scalia noted dryly in his

dissent Monday.

VMI’s nightly prayers were recit-
ed by a student chaplain after cadets
marched into the mess hall. The
prayers, one for each night of the
week except Saturday, mentioned
God but not Jesus or other religious
figures. All the prayers concluded
with the phrase, “Now, O God, we
receive this food and share this meal
together with thanksgiving. Amen.”

The case arose when two cadets
asked the school to change the
prayer ceremony, and sued when
VMI refused. The American Civil
Liberties Union represented the

Study: Seasons Affect
Levels of Cholesterol

CHICAGO I Cholesterol levels tend
to rise in the winter and fall in the
summer — variations that in some
cases could affect treatment deci-
sions, researchers say.

Their study found the biggest
seasonal changes occurred in
women and in people with already
elevated cholesterol, whose levels
fluctuated as much as 18 points.

“It’s important for physicians to
know this because they need to fac-
tor it into how they treat patients,”
said lead author Dr. Ira Ockene, a

University of Massachusetts car-
diologist.

Ockene said the findings could
be useful to patients who want to try
lowering their cholesterol through
lifestyle changes instead of drugs.
He said many patients could end up
getting discouraged if they started
diets in the summer and did not see
much change or even an increase
by wintertime.

The study appears in Monday’s
Archives of Internal Medicine.

WASHINGTON | An expedition is
being planned for this summer to
the upper reaches of Turkey’s Mount
Ararat where organizers hope to
prove an object nestled amid the
snow and ice is Noah’s Ark.

A joint U.S.-Turkish team of 10
explorers plans to make the arduous
trek up Turkey’s tallest mountain, at
17,820 feet, from July 15 to August 15.

The goal: to enter what they
believe to be a mammoth struc-

ture some 145 feet high, 75 feet
wide and up to 450 feet long that
was exposed in part by last sum-
mer’s heat wave in Europe.

Explorers have long searched
for an ark on the high slopes of
Mount Ararat, where the biblical
account of the Great Flood places
it. A ban on travel to the area was
lifted in 1982, but explorers have
been unable to substantiate any
claim of an ark. (ap)

CHICAGO I White supremacist lead-
er Matthew Hale, whose gospel of
“racial holy war” was linked to a
follower’s deadly shooting ram-
page five years ago, was found
guilty Monday of trying to have a
federal judge killed.

Hale, 32, was found guilty of four
of the five charges against him. He
was found not guilty of one of two
counts of soliciting the murder of
a federal judge. The judge was not
attacked.

Prosecutors said Hale was furi-
ous after U.S. District Judge Joan
Humphrey Lefkow ordered him to
stop using the name World Church
of the Creator because it had been
trademarked by an Oregon-based
group that has no ties to Hale.

The defense argued that Hale
never asked anyone to kill the judge
and that the FBI used an informant
to draw him into a murder plot.

During the trial, jurors heard
more than a dozen tapes of Hale
using racial slurs, including one
in which he laughs about the 1999
shooting rampage by one of his fol-
lowers, Benjamin Smith. Smith tar-
geted minorities and killed two peo-
ple, including former Northwestern
University basketball coach Ricky

they behaved recklessly in going to a
country that Japan had repeatedly

BAGHDAD, IRAQ I U.S. troops in
Fallujah came under a heavy insur-
gent attack Monday, a day after U.S.
officials decided to extend a cease-
fire rather than launch a full-scale
offensive on the city. One Marine
and eight insurgents were killed.

Marines battled Sunni guerril-
las around a mosque in Fallujah ’s
Jolan district, a poor neighborhood
where insurgents are concentrated.
Helicopter gunships joined the bat-
tle, which sent heavy black smoke
over the city. Tank fire demolished
a minaret from which officials said
gunmen were firing.

The U.S. troops met “a real
nasty bunch,” said Marine Lt. Col.
Brennan Byrne. But he said the vio-
lence would not deter plans to begin
joint U.S. -Iraq patrols in the city.

The patrols are a key part of the
U.S. effort to establish a semblance
of control over Fallujah without a
wider Marine assault, which would
revive the bloody warfare seen ear-
lier this month.

U.S. officials said they wanted
to press forward with a political
tack, a day after abruptly toning
down threats to launch a full- out
assault on the city.

“We will take the time neces-
sary to see if there is not a political

solution,” Secretary of State Colin
Powell said Monday. “But as you
saw today, when our soldiers and
our Marines are attacked, they
will respond and they will respond
with force to protect themselves.”

leaders approved a new flag for the
country, dumping Saddam Hussein’s
red-and-black standard. Although
the new design has a crescent rep-
resenting Islam, the flag no longer
bears the words “God is great.”

The new design not only aban-

dons the symbols of Saddam’s
regime, it also avoids the colors
used in other Arab flags: green
and black for Islam and red for
Arab nationalism.

Iraqi artist and approved by the

ical weapons warehouse exploded
in flames Monday moments after
U.S. troops broke in to search it,
killing two soldiers and wounding
five. Jubilant Iraqis swarmed over
the Americans’ charred Humvees,
waving looted machine guns, a ban-
dolier and a helmet.

Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt did not
say what sort of chemical munitions
were believed to be produced at the
Baghdad warehouse. “Chemical
munitions could mean any num-
ber of things,” including smoke
grenades, he said.

The cause of the blast also was
unclear. Kimmitt said a large num-
ber of explosives were in the build-
ing, located in the northern neigh-
borhood of Waziriyah.

Asked about reports that the
search team included members of
the Iraq Survey Group — the U.S.
team looking for weapons of mass
destruction — Kimmitt said only:
“The inspection was by a number
of coalition forces.”

Meanwhile, in the south outside
the holy city of Najaf, Shiite militia-
men in cars fired rocket-propelled
grenades at a U.S. position, witness-

Kong’s hopes for quickly attaining
full democracy, ruling Monday that
the territory cannot directly elect
its next leader because it could stir
social and economic instability.

Critics, including the U.S. con-
sul general, charged that Hong
Kong’s promised autonomy had
been harmed by the decision from
China’s top legislative panel, the

that experts will study the paint-
ing to determine what materials it
is made of and evaluate its vulner-
ability to temperature changes. The

of its leader for fear he will be assas-
sinated like his two predecessors:
founder Sheik Ahmed Yassin and

Senate committee bill caps car reimbursements

RICHMOND, VA. I The Senate Finance
Committee on Monday endorsed a
tax bill that would cap the state’s car
tax reimbursements at $950 mil-
lion annually, applying a brake to
the state’s popular 1998 no -car-
tax law.

After a day of intense and closed-
door negotiations, the tax-writing
Senate panel also recommended
boosting the state sales tax by a
half cent, raising the nation’s low-

est cigarette tax from 2.5 cents to
30 cents, increasing the levy on
recording real estate transactions
and closing some loopholes that
allow corporations to send profits
out of state tax-free.

Except for capping the reim-
bursements state government sends
to cities and counties to compensate
them for tax revenue lost as the tax
on personal cars and pickup trucks
was phased out, the Senate plan is

similar to the bill it received from
the House two weeks ago.

The additional net revenue to the
state will come to about $1 billion over
the course of a two-year budget.

However, it frees up additional
revenue in years to come by limit-
ing the car tax relief, which pres-
ently costs state government about
$860 million a year with 70 percent
of the tax phased out. Because of the
increasing value of cars, however, the
state’s net payout increases by about

‘Polio Pioneers’ Observe
Vaccine’s Anniversary

MCLEAN, VA. I On April 26, 1954,
scientists delivered what was called
“the shot felt around the world” in
the cafeteria of Franklin Sherman
Elementary School in McLean, Va.
Dr. Richard Mulvaney gave 6 -year-
old Randy Kerr the first inoculation
of a vaccine developed by Dr. Jonas
Salk to fight polio.

To mark the 50th anniversary,
Mulvaney was reunited Monday
with graying adults who were
among those second graders 50
years ago.

“Children died, and I had a little
friend in the hospital who did die,”
said Rita Bourgois, a polio survivor
who fell ill at age 10, two days after
her 12 -year- old brother went to
Children’s Hospital in Washington
with the disease in 1954. When they
left the hospital three months later,
Bougois said doctors told her they
were the only polio victims to walk
out of the hospital that year.

The 1954 field trial was the largest
voluntary clinical trial ever. The chil-

Stewart s company
appears unharmed by
her March conviction

DETROIT I Kmart Holding Corp.
strengthened its partnership with
Martha Stewart’s company Monday,
announcing that it was dropping
a lawsuit about royalty payments
and that the two damaged compa-
nies were extending their licensing
agreement by two years to 2009.

Stewart’s March 5 conviction of
obstructing justice and lying about
a stock sale does not appear to have
hurt the partnership.

“We are pleased to have extend-

ed and deepened our relationship,”
Kmart chief executive Julian Day
said in a statement.

Kmart, which emerged from
bankruptcy last May, has staked its
recovery in part on the success of the
Martha Stewart Everyday brand.

In a complaint filed in February,
Kmart accused Martha Stewart
Living Omnimedia Inc. of over-
charging it for the exclusive rights
to sell housewares and other prod-
ucts under the Martha Stewart
Everyday label.

The companies said they had
reached a new agreement on roy-
alties on Kmart ’s sales of goods
bearing Stewart’s name, (ap)

MINNEAPOLIS I President George
W. Bush pushed high-tech pro-
posals in a politically important
state Monday, calling for perma-
nently banning taxes on high-speed
Internet access.

Bush, on his eighth trip to Min-
nesota, spoke at the annual meeting
ofthe American Association of Com-
munity Colleges. He tied a healthy
economy and job growth to putting
high-speed Internet service in every
home by the year 2007.

The United States ranks 10th in
the industrialized world in broad-
band capability and “10 is 10 spots
too low,” the president said.

Broadband is especially impor-
tant to the technology industry since
it can be used to sell an array of prod-
ucts, including movies and music.

Broadband grew from about
7 million subscribers in December
2000 to nearly 24 million in June
2003. About 90 percent of all U.S.
postal codes have access to one form
of broadband connection — up from

about 70 percent in 2000.

Back in Washington, congres-
sional supporters of the permanent
tax ban on Internet access planned
to bring their bill back to the Senate,
following several months of fruit-
less negotiations.

Democratic candidate John
Kerry’s campaign said Bush’s ini-
tiatives were “little more than a
smoke -and-mirrors operation” to
hide how little the administration
has done to promote the high-tech-

for Internet Explorer have become
nearly essential tools online: They
can block pop-up ads, alert you to
new e-mail, even protect you from
scams. Two new toolbars, from
America Online and EarthLink,
debuted Monday.

Toolbars from the search lead-
ers — Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft
and AOL — all have decent pop-

up blockers that kill windows you
don’t want (ads) and permit ones
you request (shipping details, for
instance). And they’re all a snap to
download and install.

The main attraction of the AOL
toolbar is that it displays the number
of mail messages you have, provided
you’re logged on through AOL.

The new EarthLink toolbar
blocks fake EarthLink, eBay and

PayPal sites that try to steal your
passwords or credit card numbers.
It also searches your computer for
malicious programs known as “spy-
ware,” though to remove them, you
need an EarthLink account.

Among these features,
EarthLink’s ScamBlocker is
the most promising, especially
once sites identified by the anti-
spam company Brightmail are
added next month. However, the
Earthlink toolbar makes mistakes
recognizing legitimate pop-ups.

personal WiFi signal, is it ethical
for me to use it?

Unless you know they intended
to make that signal available, you’re
on shaky ground. Briefly borrow-
ing a signal is something that a lot
of people will do, but if you find a

random signal and decide to keep
using that as your Internet connec-
tion instead of getting your own,
then, yup, that’s just theft.

I notice people in coffee shops
looking at porn on their laptops and
I wonder about people who have
children. What are the laws regard-
ing looking at porn in public?

Believe it or not. I’ve seen this
query come up before — there
have been cases of people watch-
ing porn on their car DVD play-
ers, much to the consternation of
drivers next to them at stoplights.
Some laws have been proposed,
but I don’t think there’s anything
on the books specifically address-
ing this problem.

F I T N E S S I Not every fitness program
inspires the kind of devotion the Bar
Method does. Many who have dis-
covered this workout have become
quick devotees. “You’ll feel so good
afterward,” they gush.

Maybe not so good during,
though. In a level- one class, pain
from doing half-squats while
standing on the balls of the feet
is intense. Muscles burn and legs
shake noticeably.

Burr Leonard, Bar Method’s
creator, based the regimen on the
Lotte Berk Method, which dates to
1970 in New York. Both use repeti-
tive exercises and stretches that tone
and strengthen muscles using small,
precise movements done with cor-
rect body alignment.

The Bar Method incorporates ele-
ments of yoga and Pilates, but it uses
a ballet barre and floor mat, with
no machines. Classes begin with

upper-body exercises using light-
weight dumbbells, then progress
to intense lower-body work at the
barre and on the mat. Abdominal
work and stretches round out the
class. Though heart rates can be
raised, this is not truly a cardio

hitter, Matt Bowen moves to his
natural position at strong safety
and, as we know, is a voracious hit-
ter. Is it fair to say we’ll see more
dropped balls and fewer passes
over the middle?

That had better be the result, or
the Redskins will have wasted a very
high draft pick and a lot of money.
But I don’t think Taylor will be a
wasted pick. The scouts are nearly
unanimous in thinking he will be
a great safety.

Lovefest at Redskins Park

For having only three draft picks,

I guess you would have to call this
draft successful for the Redskins.

It was a very good draft for a
team that went in with three picks
and ended up with four. But they
can’t keep going into the draft every
year with only three picks. That will
catch up to you eventually. You will
have an old team, and you will have
trouble holding on to all your players
because veteran players are more
expensive than rookies.

While I applaud the Redskins for
drafting defense instead of pur-
suing an offensive name (Kellen
Winslow) for marketing purposes,
don’t you think they are still soft up
front on defense?

I do think there are some holes
on the defensive line still. They are
short a pass rusher, and they still
have to count on Brandon Noble
to make it all the way back from
that knee injury. But they are bet-
ter on defense now than they were
on Friday, with Taylor aboard, and
defensive coach Gregg Williams will
be far more creative than George
Edwards was in finding ways to
get to the quarterback.

out of time to keep drug cheaters out
of the Athens Games, U.S. Olympic
officials want some help from fed-
eral authorities.

And they aren’t just going after
athletes who have failed drug tests.
Instead, they hope to use a clause
in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s
rules to bar athletes who acknowl-
edge the use of steroids and other
banned substances, including in
grand jury testimony.

USOC president Bill Martin

and other Olympic officials say
they need assistance to keep out
competitors using banned sub-
stances. They would love access to
grand jury transcripts in the Bay
Area Laboratory Co-Operative case
involving the alleged distribution
of steroids to top athletes.

While such grand jury proceed-
ings are secret by law, the Senate
Commerce Committee chairedby Sen.
John McCain, R-Ariz., issued a sub-
poena for the BALCO testimony.

According to an AP poll released
Monday, nine out of every 10
Americans believe the use of ste-
roids and other performance-

NFL Player’s Body Arrives
At Delaware Air Force Base

Pat Tillman arrived at Dover Air Force

Base in Delaware on Monday, a mili-
tary official said. Tillman was killed
in combat Thursday in Afghanistan.
Funeral arrangements were pend-
ing. Tillman’s family didn’t release
what funeral home the body would
be taken to, said Shari Lawrence, a
spokeswoman for the Army Human
Resources Command. His brother,
Spc. Kevin Tillman, also a Ranger
with the 2nd Battalion of the 75th
Ranger Regiment, was expected to
accompany the body to the funeral

Jack White dusts
off Loretta Lynne’s
earthy feminism

COLLABORATIONS I Eerie guitar licks
creak and swirl on Loretta Lynn’s new
album as she sings about a woman
on death row: “Now they’ve strapped
me in the chair / And covered up my
eyes / And the last voice I hear on
earth / Is my mama’s cry.”

The 69 -year-old Lynn jolted
country music 30 years ago with
plainspoken feminist songs like
“Rated X” and “The Pill.” Now she’s
re-establishing herself with “Van
Lear Rose,” a sometimes dark col-
lection produced by Jack White of
the White Stripes.

White gives Lynn’s twangy vocals
and traditional instrumentation
a rock edge, with loud drums and
bursts of grungy guitar. There’s
a driving duet called “Portland
Oregon,” a moody, atmospheric spo-
ken-word song “Little Red Shoes” and
a hand- clapping sing- along “High
on a Mountaintop.”

Lynn’s vocals were recorded in
only one or two takes, and White
used outside musicians instead of
polished Nashville studio pros.

Lynn is pleased with the results.

A LONG WAY FROM THE COAL MINE: Loretta Lynn’s career is reborn — again,

if not entirely sure what to make of
them.

“It’s different,” she said. “This
one’s just raw. It’s right out of the
front room — like we’re sittin’ in
the front room singin’. I think that’s
what he was lookin’ for, and that’s
what he got.”

Lynn’s new songs have a fresh,
urgent feel. “Have Mercy,” “Portland
Oregon” and “Mrs. Leroy Brown”
are rockers. She still writes about
the hardships of being a woman. In
“Family Tree” she aims her scorn at
ahomewrecker. “I brought along our
little babies/ ’Cause I wanted them
to see/The woman that’s burning
down/ Our family tree.”

In “Women’s Prison,” she takes a
sympathetic view of a woman who
shot her cheating lover. “I’m sittin’
here on death row/And Lord I’ve
lost my mind/For love I’ve killed
my darlin’/And for love I’ll lose
my life.”

She doesn’t know if country radio
will embrace her new album — and
doesn’t seem to worry much about
it. Most of the music she hears on
the radio is too pop for her taste: “I
don’t know what they’re trying to
do, but I knew what I was doing. Me
and Jack went in to cut a country

Sixties Soul Salvation

MUSIC I Few songs better evoke
’60s/’70s America than those
of Burt Bacharach and lyricist
Hal David.They stretch from
Camelot to Watergate, blend-
ing those eras’ sweetness and
hell. On “Here I Am: Isley Meets
Bacharach” (DreamWorks), the
Isley Brothers’ Ronald Isley longs
to reinvent them.

Throughout the 13 -song col-
lection, Bacharach himself plays
luscious yet economic piano and
conducts new arrangements which
revisit his older music.

The sessions were recorded live
at Hollywood’s Capitol Studios,
where Sinatra and storied others
sang their records.

Isley emphasizes how soul music
has always sparked Bacharach. Isley
wants more from these songs than
the seamless spiciness Dionne
Warwick lent them on her ’60s
Bacharach-produced hits. Isley ’s
idea is Bacharach-David as high-
soul, a la Aretha Franklin and
Luther Vandross.

In this gospel-fired and improvi-
sational style, a song’s melody never
rules. Such freedom can yield explo-
sive soul singing, yet for listeners
accustomed to Bacharach-David
compactness, Isley ’s approach
initially may jar — his virtuo-
sic tenor changes things up. Yet
he executes everything with fine
sculptural finesse.

IT’S HIS MOVE: Ron Isley both honors
and re-invents Bacharach’s songs.

Once Isley’s style begins to gel
with the orchestral grounding of
Bacharach’s arrangements, though,
his notions triumph. Collection
standouts include “This Guy’s in
Love With You,” taken very slow;
the atmospheric “In Between the
Heartaches”; and “Alfie,” in which
Isley fires the sonic illusion of an
infinite melody.

His “Raindrops Keep Falling on
My Head” is m^orly risl^. Bacharach
retards the tempo and Isley drama-
tizes the lyrics’ complaints.

Just as a listener might wonder
how Isley’s anguish might contin-
ue, Bacharach restates a gorgeous-
ly neutral trumpet melody, and the
piece swerves back into coherence.
The performance illustrates the
span and possibilities of a field Mr.
Bacharach’s music has long hon-
ored and extended: soul.

lawns to earn money, Jonathan

brigade cracks down,
with weird results

every friggin’ day.”

With cable television liberally
salting shows with the four-letter
word that starts with F and gov-
ernment regulators effectively ban-
ning the same word from broadcast
airwaves, a new middle ground has
opened where euphemistic substi-
tutes for the term flourish.

the common vulgarity they replace.
Picking up on the trend, Esquire
magazine this month offers a guide
to “work clean.” “One of its sugges-
tions is “What the stink?”

In the middle of last century,
writers tried with varying degrees
of success to bring the word to their
pages.

“In his 1948 book ‘The Naked
and the Dead,’ Norman Mailer
was forced by his publisher to use
‘fug,’” said Jesse Sheidlower, author
of “The F Word.”

“There’s a famous story told
about Dorothy Parker who, when
she met him, said, ‘Oh, so you’re the
young man who can’t spell f— .’”

In the world of entertainment,
euphemisms can be part of the cat-
and-mouse game played by writers
and in-house censors. Lately, some
writers have taken to using “fake
euphemisms” — words that no one
actually uses but sound like they
could be obscene, linguists say.

Euphemisms for the forbidden
word are counted by media analysts

at the Parents Television Council,
an advocacy organization that pub-
lishes reports on TV sex, violence
and foul language.

Among the 500 pages of exam-
ple, the more creative include
a “Scrubs” episode in which
Dr. Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke)
exclaims: “Frick! Double frick!”
and a “Dharma and Greg” show
where Dharma says of Greg’s
father, “Oh, he’s definitely flink-
ing somebody.”

Nicholas Wootton, a producer
of and CO -head writer on “NYPD
Blue,” a show known for its enve-
lope-pushing curses as well as
inventive euphemisms, shuns such
efforts as ridiculous — and way too
mild for certain characters. “No one
says ‘friggin’ in real life,” he said.

has invited fans to bootleg his music
— and he’s offering prizes for the
most creative theft.

The musician’s Web site urges
fans to mix classic Bowie songs
with material from his latest album,
“Reality,” to create a “mash-up” —
a track that uses vocals from one
song superimposed over the back-
ing tracks of another.

Developments in music soft-
ware have made the technique
long employed by record produc-
ers easily accessible to thousands
of “bedroom DJs” — a fact that has
alarmed record companies battling
for control of Internet music dis-
tribution.

But Bowie, 57, was quoted as say-
ing in Monday’s editions of London’s
The Times that mash-ups were “a

great appropriation idea waiting
to happen.”

“Being a hybrid maker off and
on over the years. I’m very comfort-
able with the idea and have been the
subject of quite a few pretty good
mash-ups myself,” the newspaper
quoted him as saying.

The music software needed for
the task can be downloaded from
Bowie’s Web site, along with tracks

from his new album.

Following the end of the contest
on May 17, Bowie will choose the
winning tack, and it will be released
as an MP3 single. The winner will
also get a new car.

The mash-up technique gained
prominence with “The Gray Album,”
a blend of The Beatles and Jay-Z
by a DJ who calls himself Danger
Mouse.

A reported 1 million copies were
downloaded from the Internet
before it was blocked by record

Don’t Sit Idol-ly By

SCANDALS I Last week’s “American
Idol” (8 p.m., Fox) displayed the
popular show’s most maddening
contradictions.

The week before last, Simon
Cowell chastised several of the
singers for choosing songs too
adult for their tender ages. The very
next week, “Idol” saddled the con-
testants with the Barry Manilow
songbook — the epitome of “mel-
low and middle-aged.”

But neither Manilow nor the
judges could be blamed for last
week’s shocking conclusion:
America put the three most tal-
ented singers. Fantasia, La Toya
and Jennifer, at the bottom of the
heap.

week, got the boot. Stunned, Randy
and Paula clearly implied that the
rejection of the three “divas” and the
retention of the talent- challenged
John Stevens had much to do with
popularity, gender and race.

As a television critic, I can
only say “welcome to my world.”
Folks, you had a chance to cham-
pion “Greg the Bunny,” “Andy
Richter Controls the Universe,”
“Wonderfalls,” “Boomtown” and
“Arrested Development,” but
you chose “8 Simple Rules” and
“According to Jim.” And that’s
your right.

Maybe the prospect of John
Stevens becoming the next “Idol”
will inspire more viewers to par-
ticipate. If you don’t vote, you can’t
complain about who you get stuck

THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND on

Independent Lens (10 p.m., PBS) recalls
thefuryand madness ofthe Vietnam era,

as a means to protest
the war and overthrow
the government.

This compelling
film does a great job
of making viewers feel the fevered
atmosphere of the time. Former rad-
ical fugitives, including Mark Rudd
and Bernadine Dohrn, speakforthem-
selves. Some express confusion about
their actions, others remain unapolo-
getic, and one, Brian Flanagan, com-
pares his group’s moral certainty and

homicidal blindness to that of Timothy
McVeigh orthe9/11 hijackers.

I AM DISGUSTED by Express’s cap-
tioning of a photo depicting various
celebrities from Sunday’s March for
Women’s Lives (People, April 26).
The blurb illustrated Express’s
primitive thinking in a descrip-
tion of Cybill Shepherd’s clothing.
Using an entire sentence (of a cap-
tion containing only four) to equate
Ms. Shepherd’s ensemble with that
of “a very angry beekeeper” is both
obtuse and insulting. How superfi-
cial and judgmental of Express for
thinking that one’s choice of cloth-
ing is more important than what
they are passionate about.

I WAS OUTRAGED to read the quote
from Richard Williamson in the
April 23 article about Cuba aban-
doning the Guantanamo Bay vote
(“Citing Threats, Cuba Scraps Plan
to Censure U.S.”). Williamson, our
supposed ambassador, said: “You
know when a Cuban lies. It is when
they move their mouth.”

Why does the U.S. even bother
having ambassadors or delegates if
they are going to say such divisive
things? Williamson should be Bred
immediately.

What do you recommend for
women who work for companies
dominated by men who are uncom-
fortable working with women?
Should they press on or move on?

Press on, of course! If you aren’t
being recognized or paid appropri-
ately for your work, seek out people
within the company who will cham-
pion your efforts. If there’s no one
there to do that, then benchmark
your pay and performance with pro-
fessionals at similar companies and
present those results to your boss.

If you still get the short end of
the stick, then you probably should
move on. It will be their loss and
you’ll know that for your colleagues
and our daughters, you gave it your
best shot.

Do you have suggestions for find-
ing mentors and networking?

Just ask someone you really
admire, someone you think can
teach you something. She (or he) will
likely be flattered that you recognize
they have something others can learn
from. Be sure to ask people not just
because they’re powerful and you
calculate that they can help you get
ahead. People will sense that.

More women are around me at work
than ever before (I’m a guy). They’ll
be taking over the world soon. Do
you see that in the next five years?

I think once we get to levels where
women are 30 percent or more of
corporate boards, that will be the
time we’ll start seeing more women
as chief executives. I don’t know if
we’ll see numbers that high in five
years, but in 10, 1 think we’ll be there.
Many of the women I talked to said
their crops of young corporate tal-
ent are full of women.
